Tournament Participation Rules

This page outlines the guidelines you must follow regarding the tournaments that the Toowoomba Chess Club holds in our region.

Weekend Tournaments

Tournaments organised by the Toowoomba Chess Club that aren’t organised through the schools where players are not representing their school but themselves.

Officials Decisions

When it comes to weekend tournaments the Toowoomba Chess Club Management Committee will stand in as an appeals committee for any disagreements or anyone wishing to appeal a decision or action made by an official.

Supervision of Junior Players

Whilst the Toowoomba Chess Club allocates areas of play for in between games for the use of younger chess players at various venues, these areas are not provided for purposes of child care and their use is subject to the oversight of the parents or guardians of these younger chess-players attending on the day.

It is not the role of Arbiter or Organisers to police areas outside of the playing venue. Their role is to ensure that chess games are played in accordance with the rules and ensuring order in the playing venue.

Supervision of children outside of the playing hall is solely the responsibility of the parent or caregiver, not the Arbiter or Organiser of the tournament, which has been the case for at least 20 years.

Behaviour

It is an expectation that any child or adult taking part in a Toowoomba Chess Club event adhere to the expected behaviours and behave to an acceptable standard. If this does not happen there will be potential repercussions of poor behaviour.

Toowoomba Chess Club expects every player and their parents, caregivers and partners to exhibit respect to other participants, their associates and Toowoomba Chess Club Officials.

Upon entering a Toowoomba Chess Club event, the player acknowledges and accepts the following standards of behaviour and the consequences of any breach of those standards.

Every parent or caregiver, by virtue of their charge’s participation in a Toowoomba Chess Club event, acknowledges and accepts the following standards of behaviour and the consequences of any breach of those standards.

Behavioural Standards

No player, parent or caregiver shall engage in conduct that is violent, threatening, or demeaning of another player, parent, caregiver, commentator, or tournament official. For the avoidance of doubt, threatening behaviour includes the use of words directed to any person at a Toowoomba Chess Club event, and includes the use of swearing and gestures and includes threats made directly or by use of electronic means or social media.

All players, parents and caregivers shall respect all property and the venue, and shall not engage in any conduct deleterious to the property or the venue.

Where such conduct is engaged in, a tournament official shall, as deemed appropriate, advise the Chief Arbiter /Organiser of such conduct who may:

  • call the Police and/or require the person or persons or any number of them engaged in such conduct to leave the venue and take no further part in the tournament.
  • require the player involved to miss one or more rounds of the tournament.
  • report such conduct to the Chess Association of Queensland.

And no appeal shall arise from this determination.

School Tournaments

Tournaments organised in conjunction with the primary or secondary schools in the region where players attending are representing their school.

Officials Decisions

In relation to school chess tournaments the decisions made by the arbiter/organisers are final.

Supervision of Junior Players

At school tournaments, each school needs to have representative/s attend (e.g. teachers, parents or supervisors) for the supervision and responsibility of their students.

The Toowoomba Chess Club plays no role in the supervision or child care of any children in attendance away from the tournament playing area. Any allocated play areas provided on the day are to be used subject to the oversight of the parents, guardians or supervisors of these chess players attending on the day.
